About The Woolchemist

My Story

My name is Veronika, Roni for short, and I am the hands and heart behind The Woolchemist. Originally from Hungary, I arrived to beautiful Scotland 16 years ago, and I never looked back. Once my children were a bit older, and following a scary diagnosis, at 40 years of age I realised there’s no time like the present to pursue a career that I love, and I launched my yarn dyeing small business in 2022.

At this time, I’d already been a huge fan of hand dyed wool for many years, and I accumulated quite a bit of knowledge on the subject, but I’m still learning every day. My studies in business, marketing and more specifically my graphic design qualifications came in handy when launching my business, but it is my long standing love of art and my true community spirit that really makes this the perfect line of work for me.

Community has been at the heart of The Woolchemist brand from the start. My closed Facebook group WoolChemistry counts 600 members, and we hold regular make-alongs and online yarn markets there. It’s an inclusive and kind community of makers from all over the world

Over the last years, I attended the biggest yarn events in Scotland as a vendor, I had my yarns used for designs featured in the prestigious The Journal of Scottish Yarns several times, and my business has grown internationally as well as locally, thanks to my popular book themed Yarn Advent Calendars and my monthly mystery skein clubs.

‘Why Veronika Decided To Dye’

(with a grateful nod to Paul Coelho)

I believe that the time and effort that goes into your hand crafted piece deserves the best material, and nothing gives more wow factor than hand dyed yarn! Making something for yourself or a loved one is the ultimate expression of your heart and soul. The colours and fibres should reflect that!
This is why I only use the softest, high quality and low micron count hand dyed yarns for my own projects, and for all the skeins you can see in my shop!

I fell in love with hand dyed yarn many years ago, and I never looked back. Over the years, I have learned that not all wool is created equally, and colour isn’t everything: I’m passionate about breaking the misconception that wool is always scratchy and will irritate the skin. Having super sensitive skin myself, I had to sell on or donate many beautiful hand dyed skeins because even though they were classed as “merino”, with their 22-27 microns they caused my skin to redden and I couldn’t bear wearing garments made from these yarns up against my neck, chest or arms. To this day, I can only tolerate the widely available hand dyed yarns on my feet as socks.

It was an absolute must that when I start my dyer journey, I would use wool with under 20 microns that won’t cause skin reactions and I have since proven to several sceptic customers that my yarns are perfectly soft and comfortable even against the most sensitive skin. I offer some of the softest wool bases available on the market, at affordable prices! My yarns contain 19.5 micron extra fine merino, the long fibres of which should never irritate or cause itching.

I create unique, exciting and eye catching colours on the softest wool for those knitters, crocheters and weavers who would like to take their creations to the next level. What’s more: I’m also happy to accept custom orders, so if you are looking for a very specific shade or you have a vision, I’ll be only too happy to bring it to life for you! Please get in touch with any request or question!
